What is coaching?

Coaching as Defined by the International Coach Federation (ICF)

Philosophy

The International Coach Federation adheres to a form of coaching that honours the Client as the expert in their personal and/or professional life and believes that every Client is creative, resourceful, and whole. Standing on this foundation, the Coach's responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the Client wants to achieve

  • Encourage Client self–discovery

  • Elicit Client–generated solutions and strategies

  • Hold the Client as responsible and accountable

Definition

Professional Coaching is an on going professional relationship that helps people produce

Extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. Through the process of coaching, Clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life. In each meeting, the Client chooses the focus of conversation, while the Coach listens and  contributes observations and questions. This interaction creates clarity and moves the Client Into action. Coaching accelerates the Client's progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on where Clients are now and what  they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future. ICF member coaches and ICF credentialed coaches recognize that results are a matter of the Client's intentions, choices and actions, supported by the Coach's efforts and application of the coaching process.

What is the difference between a coach and a therapist?

A coach and a therapist are very different, starting with the qualifications that are required for each. Therapy, reflects back on the past and tries to help the client heal from hurtful events whereas coaching focuses on the present and future, helping the client resolve limiting beliefs that are holding them back.

How do you conduct the coaching sessions?

This depends on distance and preference and is agreed upon at the start of the coaching relationship. Most often, sessions are conducted over the Phone, FaceTime or Google Hangout. This allows for optimal flexibility and convenience for both coach and client.

If you are in the Toronto, Canada area, you have the option of in-person sessions at a mutually agreed upon locations. Even if you are local and opt for phone sessions, it’s desirable to meet in person for the first session.  I’ve worked with clients from around the country (and even the world!), so distance is not an issue.
